DESCRIPTION:Click for Latest Location Information: http://semtech2011.semanticweb.com/sessionPop.cfm?confid=62&proposalid=3866\nMaster Data Management is an attempt to harmonize reference data within an organization (and beyond in some cases), but its goals are often too ambitious and either the project fails,or is scaled back, more or less defeating the purpose. While to dream of harmonized data that people and applications can use to eliminate ambiguity and error is possible in principle, the representational framework for it, usually relational databases, is not up to the task. The solution is right in front of us - ontology and semantic technology.\nAt the very least, the investigatory and modeling efforts at the from of MDM are perfect targets for a dose of semantics, if not the entire process.\nAttendees will be presented:\n

A very brief history and current state of MDM and Data Governance\n
Some common problems MDM projects encounter\n
A description, with examples,of applications of ontology in the early phases of MDM\n
Decryption of a completely ontology-based MDM and the power of context and reasoning
